Baya
We picked up our first Buhund, Hundehaven's Baya Asgardsdatter, when she was eight weeks old in the spring of 2008 from Catherine and Rune Lassesen's Hundehaven. On May 4, 20010 Baya had her first litter of puppies, 4 bitches and 2 dogs. Baya is extremely friendly and loves other dogs, people, and especially children.
In November of 2009 at the Umpqua Kennel Club Show in Roseburg, OR, Baya became only the fifth Norwegian Buhund American Kennel Club Champion (beating a total of at least 15 other Buhunds in conformation competitions). In 2009, the Canine Chornicles ranked her 9th among all Buhunds in the U.S. in the All Breed rankings and 7th in the Breed rankings. In November of 2010 at the Umpqua Kennel Club Show in Roseburg, OR Baya placed 4th in the Herding Group which gave her 45 All-Breed points for the year and an 8th place in the All Breed rankings. At the Rose City Classic Dog Show in January 2012, Baya became the 3rd Buhund to become an AKC Grand Champion.
Baya does have faults and with respect to the AKC/NBCA Breed Standard, her body is too long, giving her a rectangular appearance, rather than the squarer Buhund ideal. We know that there is no such thing as a dog that perfectly meets the breed standard and we think that her wonderful personality more than makes up for any physical faults that she might have. A dog's personality is as different and distinctive as a human being's and not every Buhund will have Baya's disposition.
Baldur
Baldur was one of the puppies in Baya's first litter born May 4, 2010. We intended for him to go to a pet home but when we had the litter evaluated by Pat Hastings, she insisted that his structure was so good that we needed to show him. Pat is the expert and she definitely got it right with Bladur. The first day that we showed him in November of 2010 at the Umpqua Kennel Club Dog Show in Roseburg, OR, he won Best of Breed over 8 other Buhunds including 4 AKC champions. He continued to do well that weekend and accumulated enough points to become an AKC Champion at the tender age of 6 months. In January 2011 he won Best of Breed all four days at the Portland Rose City Classic, against a large field of competitors at least for Buhunds and then in March at the Linn County Kennel Club show he again won Best of Breed every day he was entered and became the first male Buhund AKC Grand Champion. Perhaps it was fate, since his namesake is the Norse god of beauty and peace, although he may have beauty but he is rarely at peace. He has gone to 3 different homes but due to no fault of his own they have not worked out and so he lives with us and the children love him so much that they'll never part with him, much to the chagrin of a close family friend who really wanted him.
Ostara (Star)
Star is Baldur's littermate and was also rated very highly by Pat Hastings. She lives with and is co-owned by our friends Mary Ann and Ben. She has also done well in the conformation ring and is an AKC Champion. |
