2 Our story 1

Welcome to Nyskjelstadmark Norwegian Buhunds. We are a Father, Roger, and Daughter, Rowan (age 12), that co-own a delightful Norwegian Buhund female, Grand Champion Hundehaven's Baya Asgardsdatter and two of her offspring, Grand Champion Baldur Bayasen av Nyskjelstadmark and Champion Ostara Bayadatter av Nyskjelstadmark (the latter along with our friends Mary Ann and Ben). We are proud to be one of only seven breeders approved by the Norwegian Buhund Club of America. We live on a farm south of Corvallis, Oregon, the heart of the Willamette Valley, and the home of the Oregon State University Beavers. Rowan is in 7th grade, her 8th year of Spanish language immersion. She plays the viola, soccer, clarinet, and the Nintendo. Roger is a Public Policy Professor at OSU. In addition to our dogs, we both enjoy riding our two Norwegian Døle Horse mares, Blissen and Blitsen.

The strange kennel name, Nyskjelstadmark is derived from the old Norse name of a farming valley in central Norway, near Stjørdal in Nord-Trøndelag. The "Ny" has been added to denote "New." It is pronounced Nee-shell-sta-mark..

Baya

We picked up our first Buhund, Hundehaven's Baya Asgardsdatter, when she was eight weeks old in the spring of 2008 from Catherine and Rune Lassesen's Hundehaven. On May 4, 20010 Baya had her first litter of puppies, 4 bitches and 2 dogs. Baya is extremely friendly and loves other dogs, people, and especially children. At the Rose City Classic Dog Show in January 2012, Baya became the 3rd Buhund to become an AKC Grand Champion.

Baldur

Baldur was one of the puppies in Baya’s first litter born May 4, 2010.  The first time we showed him in November of 2010 at the Umpqua Kennel Club Dog Show in Roseburg, OR, he won Best of Breed over 8 other Buhunds including 4 AKC champions.  Later that weekend he become an AKC Champion at the tender age of 6 months.  In March 2011 at the Linn County Kennel Club show became the first male Buhund AKC Grand Champion.

2 Our breed 1
The Buhund is the traditional farm (Bu) dog (hund) of Norway. Bu has several meanings including farm, farm shed, and livestock. The Buhund is a spitz breed with a double-curled tail that lies tightly over its back, a wolf-shaped head and prick ears that stand up straight. Wheaten (pale cream to bright orange) is the most common color but they can also be black with minimal white markings. The Buhund is an all-purpose herding dog for sheep and cattle and a vigilant watch dog. But the Buhund is also a loyal family dog that, as stated in its breed standard, is "very affectionate with people." They can be absolutely wonderful with children.
